The overall goal of our research has been to understand in structural and chemical terms how membrane proteins function. Current work focuses on five general areas: 1) the molecular mechanisms of signal transduction by G protein-coupled receptors, receptor tyrosine kinases, and cytokine receptors, 2) the structure, formation and inhibition of amyloid fibrils associated with Alzheimer’s, prion, and Huntington’s disease, 3) viral activation of membrane receptor proteins, 4) the structure and gating mechanisms of ion channels and 5) bioinformatics approaches to membrane protein structure and function.
